Abstract. Monitoring of volcano activity can be done using several methods, which one of them is the deformation method. This method can be implemented by utilizing various sensors and techniques, which one of them is based on the observations to GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites. This paper describes the use of GPS survey method for studying the deformation of Ijen volcano, a type-A active volcano located in East Java. The results of GPS surveys conducted on June 2002, April 2004, June 2004 and August 2005 show that during the increase activity of Ijen, the observed displacements of GPS stations can reach the amount of about 1-2 dm, both in horizontal and vertical components. This level of deformation however, was not followed by the eruption of Ijen volcano.
